James Ware Pitts is a Santa Fe based visual artist. Born in Huntsville, Alabama, he received a BS in Accounting and then studied painting and photography at Memphis Academy of Art on a full tuition merit scholarship. In 1980 he moved to New Mexico. His primary focus for 20 years was on hand coating platinum prints from large format negatives, but his interest has now shifted to sculpture, painting and creating pigment prints from digital files of scanned negatives. Currently Pitts is working on several projects, one of which is a book of photographs of “landscape anomalies” entitled Elephant Memory, a collection of images dating from the early 1980’s to the present time, of expressive marks, either accidental or intentional, made by humans in the environment. He is also documenting his travels with sets of “postcards” which are accompanied by a written narrative. Pitts’ paintings and photographs have been featured in both solo and group exhibitions in Europe, Japan and the U.S. and are included in museum and private collections worldwide.
