Symposium | New Thoughts on the Photographic Portrait | Part 1

Offering new thoughts on the photographic portrait and its larger role in contemporary culture, this symposium brings together perspectives from a contemporary artist, two curators, and a critic.

Dr. Amy Galpin, Colin Westerbeck, Dulce Pinzón, and Ty Burr will discuss Arnold Newman's immense contribution to the concept of the environmental portrait, and offer new thoughts on photographic portraiture. In conjunction with Arnold Newman: Masterclass and Summer Break 2013, a 10-day festival of contemporary art and culture.

Dr. Amy Galpin, Associate Curator, Art of the Americas, will introduce Arnold Newman: Masterclass and Arnold Newman: In Context, offering insight into the unique relationship between Newman's photographs and works from the Museum's Permanent Collection.

Colin Westerbeck will contextualize the work and career of Arnold Newman within the larger history of photographic portraiture. Westerbeck was Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago for seventeen years, before moving to Los Angeles in 2003.

Artist Dulce Pinzón will discuss her recent photographic series The Real Story of Superheroes (pictured left). Portions of this series are displayed in Double Portraits, an intervention into the Permanent Collection, presented in conjunction with Summer Break.

Ty Burr will discuss the nature of the moving photographic image; discussing the transformation from stage-based acting to film and the birth of celebrity—detailing the complex relationship between audience and celebrity over the last century. Burr is a film critic at the Boston Globe and author of the acclaimed cultural history Gods Like Us: On Movie Stardom and Modern Fame (Pantheon/Anchor, 2012).
