With a background in painting and the scenic arts, Jo Whaley has infused her images with the illusionary world of the theater. Her detailed, color photography combines the sensuality of painting with the veracity of the camera, and creates elaborate photographic tableaux about the nature of the imagination.
Born in 1953, Whaley received her B.A., M.A. and M.F.A from the University of California at Berkeley. She was awarded a Visual Artist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as several Polaroid Corporation Artist's Grants and the San Francisco Foundation Phelan Award. Her work is in several major collections in this country and abroad, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Oakland Museum; and the Polaroid Corporate Art Collection. The Theater of Insects was most recently featured at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego in 2009 and the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC in 2008. Her monograph of the same name was published Chronicle Books in 2008.
